There have been a lot of families that are musically talented, and you’d certainly have to put the Jackson family up there in the rankings. Not only did five of the boys from the family, including Michael of course, have a great career during childhood, but Janet Jackson has had a fine career herself. Janet has sold millions of albums to this point, and was immortalized recently by being placed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Jackson, like her siblings, was born in Gary, Indiana. All of those siblings were older, as Jackson was born on May 16, 1966. She grew up wanting to be an actress, but with all of the musical talent in her family, Jackson ended up going in that direction. While her older brothers had already found fame at a young age, Jackson didn’t have to wait long until she was in the spotlight as well.

If it weren’t for acting or singing, Jackson also had plans to be a lawyer. Her father, Joe Jackson, was insistent that she stayed in entertainment. “My father told me no,” Jackson said. “He felt that God had a different path for me.” She added that she was a very driven child, saying that “I had to get up early for school or work. I’d get ready by myself. I’d set my alarm to wake me up very early in the morning, and be off to work, the family driver driving me every morning. I did it alone, my parents never coming in to wake me up.”

In 1975, Jackson made her television debut by appearing on Cher’s variety show for an episode, and the following year joined her siblings in a variety show of their own called “The Jacksons” that aired for one season. Jackson then continued to follow her acting dreams by joining the cast of “Good Times” as Penny Woods for nearly 50 episodes and wrapped up the 1970s with a recurring role in “A New Kind of Family”.

During the 1980s, Jackson added some more acting work with “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Fame”, but a record label deal allowed her to start on her first album. That album was a self-titled one that was released in 1982, though it didn’t light up the charts. “Janet Jackson” didn’t reach the top 50, and sold 400,000 copies worldwide.

Two years later, Jackson released another album with “Dream Street” that also failed to gain much traction, selling a quarter million copies and barely scratching the top 150. Fortune changed for Jackson in 1986 with the release of the album “Control”. At that point, Jackson hadn’t had a top 50 song in the United States, but “Control” had several hits. “When I Think of You” reached the top spot, while other songs like “What Have You Done for Me Lately”, “Let’s Wait Awhile” and “Nasty” were all top five hits.

Jackson followed up her smash hit album with “Rhythm Nation 1814” in 1989, which sold 12 million copies and became the number one album in the country. There were several more number one singles for Jackson from the album, including “Escapade”, “Black Cat” and “Miss You Much”. “Rhythm Nation 1814” became one of the most successful albums of all-time as a result.

Jackson released two more albums during the 1990s with “janet.” and “The Velvet Rope”, both of which reached number one and combined for 17.65 million copies sold. Some of her biggest hits during this time included “That’s the Way Love Goes”, “Again” and “Together Again”, all of which reached the Billboard’s top spot.

Since the new millennium started, Jackson has released five more albums that have done rather well. “All for You” was a 2001 release that topped the charts, and her most recent albums were also number ones with 2008’s “Discipline” and 2015’s “Unbreakable”. She’s had two more number one singles since then, as well, with “Doesn’t Really Matter” and “All for You”. Her most recent single overall came as a collaboration with Daddy Yankee for the 2018 song “Made for Now”.

Jackson also didn’t completely abandon her acting aspirations. In 1993, she made her film debut with “Poetic Justice”, playing the main character in a film that made nearly $30 million at the box office. Other films for Jackson include the successful “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps” and a trio of collaborations with director Tyler Perry with “For Colored Girls” and the “Why Did I Get Married?” series.

Because of her successful career, Jackson has been able to amass a large net worth estimated to be nearly $200 million. With that type of money, Jackson has been able to land some big ticket cars. This includes a pair of Lamborghinis, with Jackson owning both a Gallardo Spyder that’s worth a quarter million, as well as a Murcielago. On top of that, Jackson also owns a Bentley Continental GTC convertible that was fully customized. Additionally, Jackson has an Aston Martin Vanquish, a car that starts at a price of $280,000 and only goes up with all of the bells and whistles, which Jackson surely sprung for.

Though she’s released just one album in the past decade, Jackson is still doing quite well for herself and was on tour for several years, combining the Unbreakable and State of the World Tours that spanned from 2015 to 2019. In 2019, Jackson became one of the highest grossing performers to stay on the famed Las Vegas Strip, settling at the Park MGM for 18 shows that racked up millions of dollars.
