Arnold Schwarzenegger is an internationally known athlete, actor and politician. The Conan the Barbarian star and former governor of California is also known for something else among fans of the finer things in life: his “ beastly” car collection, which has included a silver Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. Here’s a closer look at this Hollywood icon and his equally iconic collection of cars.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Graz, Australia. His home life was not easy, and he had a poor relationship with his father who favored his more athletically inclined brother. Schwarzenegger later said of his childhood, “It was a very uptight feeling at home.”

Schwarzenegger escaped to the movies as a coping mechanism, and soon became fascinated with both bodybuilding and America. By the age of 14, he’d decided on a career in bodybuilding.  Schwarzenegger was so committed to bodybuilding that he once went AWOL during basic training while serving a mandatory year of service in the Austrian Army to participate in a competition. It proved to be worth it as Schwarzenegger claimed the title of Junior Mr. Europe. He continued to push himself, and eventually became a force to be reckoned with on the bodybuilding scene after he was voted the “best-built man of Europe.”

But Schwarzenegger was aiming even higher. “The Mr. Universe title was my ticket to America — the land of opportunity, where I could become a star and get rich,” he later said.

Schwarzenegger made his way to the 1966 NABBA Mr. University competition in London in 1966. While he came in second, he caught the eye of judge Charles “Wag” Bennett, who not only offered to coach him, but also invited young Schwarzenegger to stay with his family. Schwarzenegger spent the next two years training, and won his second attempt at the Mr. Universe title in 1968. He went on to win a record-breaking five Mr. Universe crowns and six Mr. Olympia titles throughout the duration of his bodybuilding career.

When Schwarzenegger was still an unknown, he often told his friends, “I’m going to be the greatest actor!” He took a major step in this direction when he achieved his long-time goal of moving to the US in 1968 at the age of 21. Less than a decade later, he received a 1976 Golden Globe for “Best Newcomer” for his work in the film Stay Hungry.

This was just the start of a prolific career for Schwarzenegger whose size and strength made him the perfect leading man for 1980s-era action films. Over the next decade, he skyrocketed to the top of the A-list with leading roles in Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, The Terminator franchise, Commando, Predator, The Running Man, and Total Recall. He also had the chance to demonstrate his comedic talents in movies like True Lies, Twins and Kindergarten Cop.

Along the way, Schwarzenegger set his sights on an entirely new goal: politics. He was successful here, too, and won the California governor’s race in 2003 as well as the 2006 reelection.

After Schwarzenegger’s second term ended, he returned to Hollywood, appearing in The Expendables trilogy as part of a star-studded cast which also included Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Bruce Willis. He also  signed on to reprise the role that made him famous in 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate.

Today, Schwarzenegger remains an international celebrity and hometown hero: there’s even a museum dedicated to him in his native town of Thal, Austria. Schwarzenegger also shared his life story in his memoir, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has enjoyed a remarkably diverse career. He also boasts an equally remarkable car collection, which has included a Dodge Challenger SRT, a Hummer H1, an ex-military Dodge M37, an Excalibur, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, an M47 Patton Tank, a Bentley Continental GTC, and a Umimog. One of the most noteworthy vehicles in the actor’s collection, however? His Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

Given Schwarzenegger’s many connections to California, it’s hardly surprising that he’d choose a ride once hailed by Motor Trend as “the ultimate SoCal car.” The actor was first spotted behind the wheel of the soft-stop supercar in 2009. Featuring a 3.6-liter Turbo engine which produces a maximim power of 480 hp, the 911 has a top speed in excess of 190 MPH and goes from zero to 100 in just four seconds.

Schwarzenegger is far from alone in his enthusiasm for the Porsche 911. Other celebrity owners include Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, and David Beckham.

Critics are also on board with the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.  Raved Motor Trend writer Mark Rechtin on the experience of driving one,  “Here we are, gliding purposefully in an Agate Grey Metallic 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, engine purring, exhaust murmuring — its closed convertible top hinting unambiguously at hidden opulence, muscular haunches promising a rapid exit from terminal boredom.”

LA Weekly once declared Arnold Schwarzenegger to be America’s most famous immigrant who “overcame a thick Austrian accent and transcended the unlikely background of bodybuilding to become the biggest movie star in the world in the 1990s.” And really — is there any better coming-to-America, rags-to-riches success story than cruising around town in one of the planet’s most extraordinary automobiles? It’s not for nothing that The Daily Mail once declared the Porsche 911 to be “one of the most enduring ‘I’ve made it in the world’ purchases.”
